Uraiyatha Ninaivugal (Unsettling Memories), South Indian Transgender stories from real life incident
The Context
Indian Transgenders are referred as Hijras, Pavaiya, Fatadas in North & Westen India and they known as Aravanis in South India. They have virtually no safe spaces, not even in their families where they are to be protected, from prejudice and abuse. often they are treated brutally in public spaces, police stations, prisons and even in their homes.
The main factor behind the violence is that society is not able to come to terms with the fact that Aravanis do not conform to the accepted gender divisions. Most Aravanis come from lower middle-class economic background, which makes them susceptible to harassment by the police. The discrimination based on their class and gender makes the Aravani’s community one of the most dis-empowered groups in Indian society.
Transgender communities have existed in most parts of the world with their own local identities, customs and rituals. They are called Baklas in the Philippines, Berdaches among American Indian tribes, serrers in Africa and Hijras, Jogappas, Jogtas, Shiv-Shaktis and Aravanis in South Asia. The Hijra/Aravani community in India, which has a recorded history of more than 4,000 years, was considered to have special powers because of its third-gender status. It was part of a well-established `eunuch culture' in many societies, especially in West Asia, and its members held sanctioned positions in royal courts.
For many Aravanis, sex work is the only option because no one is willing to employ them because of their gender identity. Even as commercial sex workers, Aravanis are the most vulnerable group as they are placed right at the bottom of the hierarchy of sex workers. This results in their having little bargaining power and being unable to ensure that their customers practice safe sex. They are also at risk of violence both from customers and the police.
About the film
The life-long social entrapment of many Aravanis into sex work in countries like India reinforces the stigmatization of their entire community as outcasts there, creating a veritable caste system of transgender sex workers. The ongoing entrapment of one in every few hundred transgender kids into becoming willing sex objects for the local males thus works to the great advantage of the patriarchal society in which it occurs.
This fate befalls them simply because they are transgender, and thus see becoming a Aravani as being far preferable to the worse fate (to them) of remaining male. Since prostitution is "illegal" in most traditional societies, the police become a state-supported mechanism for enforcing sex worker traditions: The police do not protect the women from abuse, but instead victimize them if they don't keep in line or if they protest against the system. As a result, the police are the source of many abuses against transgender community in India, as elsewhere.
Unsettling Memories is a docu-drama about the lives of nine transgender people. The film portrays nine different situations encountered by the members of transgender community with the mainstream society and the issues confronting their gender, existence and identity.
The sequences portrayed by the actors in the film is based on their real life incidents that transpired during the course of their transitioning while acquiring this new identity as an transgender person. The real life experiences of the transgender individuals were synthesized together in the form of theatrical performance and performed by them to communicate and create an awareness regarding their living conditions to the mainstream society.
The film was based on the scripts of the individual experiences and enacted by them even though no one is an professional theater artists but they felt by putting together a cohesive story would enable them to communicate the key concerns and issues that are constantly faced by the individuals of the transgender community everyday while engaging with the mainstream society.
Kannadi Kali Kuzhu is the only theatre group of Aravanis in India and this film “Unsettling Memories” is the first drama performed to public by the group to communicate their issues and concerns with the society.

Hangover- Hidden costs of campus festivals
Переглядів 1435 років тому
College cultural celebrations have caught up with the commercial trend successfully. However, this commercialisation has come at a cost to the environment and youth culture. Even as recently as five years ago, campus festivals were not extravagant, less wasteful of resources, and more reflective of a youth culture where youth are in control. Where once support was sought from small entrepreneur...

How Ironic it is that they are Devotee of a Goddess of Chastity and fertility, because typically Pavaya are neither Chaste nor fertile. They are known to be sex- worker, and they are unable to become pregnant.
She is not only goddess of chastity and fertility but also eunuchs...read properly

For that purpose, I request to use a few seconds of clippings of your video. We will rightly give video clip credits to you in our UA-cam channel. Its The Rise Nalla Cinema. Thank you in advance.

Really great artist
Golden time... Thanks❤️
Good report, congratulations. I would like it to last two, three hours at least. There's a lot more to be known and, unfortunately, rather scarce information available in English. I couldn't find a single movie about Bahuchara Mata with English subtitles. There's an astonishing resemblance of the core of this worship with the essence and practice of several transvestite priests since thousands of years ago, in ancient Sumer (the gala priests for Goddess Inanna), in Babylon (the kugarru priests for Goddess Ishtar), among the western semites (for Goddess Astarte), in ancient Syria (for Goddess Atargatis), in ancient Phrygia, Lydia and, from there, to all the Roman Empire, from the mentioned Phrygia to Iberia (the galli priests for Goddess Cybele), in ancient Ephesus, at the temple of Goddess Artemis (one of the so-called Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with transvestite priests), in Lagina's temple of Goddess Hecate (the semnotatoi priests), in ancient Scythia (the Enaree, probably for Goddess Argimpasa), even perhaps in Scandinavia, for Goddess Freya (the northern Venus, to Whom Friday is dedicated, hence the name, Fri day). What's said in 4:34 in particular, that a Pavaiya 'has offered to wear the sari in the name of the Goddess Bahuchara' is amazingly similar to what ancient priests in the Middle East and in even in the West were doing towards their own Goddesses - and it is also amazingly similar to what today's western sissies do toward their own 'mistresses', usually paid professionals to 'force' or 'persuade' those sissies to dress like women (yes, some males pay to some women so these women act as if they were taking the initiative of feminizing those males, and then those males feel like doing it as an act of service to these women). Now, do all the Pavaiyas feel like this towards Bahuchara Mata? Are there any permanent priestesses at the temple?
Thank you for your appreciation & insightful information about universal practices among the transgender communities. Yes, ritual of initiation of novice into the community after they adorn a scarf ( duppatta vidhi) among Isamic devoutees or a skirt ( gagra vidhi) for Hindu devoutees refered to as Pavaiyas/Fatadas.
Mostly the Hindu transgender members from all over India visit and pray to Goddess Bahuchara Mata. Th cult of worshipping Bahuchara Mata is integral to their beliefs and can be seen in their daily lives too. In South India te Hindu transgender community members worship Aravanan ( the artist son of Arjuna, a less known character from the epic Mahabarath).
About the priestess I have not studied that aspect. But have seen elderly transgender gurus in Kovagam near Villupuram in Tamil Nadu, South India & in Udaipur Rajasthan Western India.

It would be interesting to see the meet with transgender women from other cultures an see what they thought of them.
Absolutely agree, they are treasure of knowledge and wisdom!
I am a transgender woman from the United States. It weird because my ancestors from Europe are the ones that caused so much grief for transgender people and 3rd gender people around the world. Yet I am transgender woman. I am glad that there is at least one Goddess in any belief that looks out for people like me.
Today, it is the people of Europe and North America that protects the rights of transgender people the most. In the ancient past of Europe, there were Goddesses and cults like this being practiced, such as those of Cybele, Artemis and Hecate, possibly Argimpasa (Scythian) and Freya (Scandinavia).
